Before the food carts and fixies, Southeast was where old Portland shook off its boots — a patchwork of mill homes, punk houses, dive bars, and porches that doubled as confessionals. This side of the river was for the artists, anarchists, burners, bikers, baristas, and bartenders who couldn’t afford NW zip codes and wouldn’t want to live there anyway.

From the neon grit of 82nd to the peace and love of Hawthorne, SE is where bands practiced too loud, zines were stapled at 2 a.m., and the landlord probably played bass. It’s Powell Blvd on a hungover morning, Clinton Street Theater still running Rocky Horror, and a chicken crossing the road for reasons you’ll never understand.

Sure, it’s shinier now — but scratch the brunch spots and yoga studios, and you’ll still find the duct-taped heart of old Portland thumping beneath.

Wear it like a flannel you found in a free box. Live weird. Die southeast.
