From 1990 to 1994, tucked into a crusty downtown storefront, the X-Ray Café wasn't just a venue — it was a vortex. Punk shows, puppet acts, noise bands, naked poetry, vegan chili, and probably a guy in a unicorn mask yelling about capitalism — all in one night. It was DIY before hashtags, weird before it was monetized, and open to everyone — especially the misfits, freaks, and teenage punks who couldn't get into the bars but still had something to scream.

Founded by Tres Shannon (later of Voodoo Doughnut fame) and Benjamin Arthur Ellis, X-Ray was a chaotic incubator for what made Portland Portland: creativity without permission, expression without filter. Elliott Smith played there. So did Smegma. So did people who duct-taped toy instruments to their bodies and called it art.

No booze, no rules, no regrets.
Wear it if your soul still smells like poetry, duct tape, and feedback.
