By night, it was all beer halls and backroom deals. By morning, chimney smoke and a hangover. But then came the artists, then the lofts, then the dogs in strollers. Look close, however, behind the boutiques and breweries, and you'll see the ghosts of longshoremen grumbling at the parking meters.
